We’re a B Corp. Finally.

Jory&Co, the creative agency making brands, websites, campaigns and impact reports for social and environmental change, is now a certified B Corp.

We scored 91.8 on the B Impact Assessment (you need 80 to pass). Five years in the making. Worth every bit of it.

We started looking at B Corp certification back in 2021. Then we looked at it again in 2022. And 2023. You know how it goes when you’re a small, busy studio: the important-but-not-urgent stuff keeps sliding to the bottom of the list.

But it was always going to happen. Jory&Co was built for impact-led brands from day one. It’s not a pivot or a positioning exercise. Around 92% of our revenue comes from organisations working on social and environmental impact, and a lot of our clients and partners have been B Corps for years. Certifying was less a leap and more a case of making official what we’d been doing all along.

Or so we thought.

What does the B Impact Assessment involve?

Here’s the honest version of Jory&Co’s B Corp journey.

We assumed that because our client work was already impact-led, the assessment would be a formality. It wasn’t. The B Impact Assessment doesn’t just ask who you work with. It asks how you run your own house: governance, workers, community, environment and customers.

And that’s where it got useful. A lot of stuff we did intuitively, but we didn’t have it written down or proper processes in place. Certification pushed us to fix that. Here are a few things we did:

  • Set up proper client surveys, so we know how we’re doing rather than assuming
  • Got a better understanding of our emissions so we could reduce them – and offset what we currently can’t avoid
  • Wrote down our supplier screening and turned it into an actual process
  • Formalised our Conscience Checker, the tool we use to decide whether a new brief is good for the world as well as good business
  • Wrote policies so they say what we actually do, in plain English, and published them where anyone can read them

None of it was glamorous. None of it wins awards. But every bit of it made us a better business.

What is a good B Corp score?

You need 80 points to certify as a B Corp. The median score for an ordinary business taking the assessment is around 51. Jory&Co scored 91.8.

We’re pretty pleased with that. We spend our days helping organisations communicate their impact. Becoming a B Corp means we can hold ourselves to the same standard.

What does B Corp certification mean for our clients?

For our clients, not much changes on the surface. Same team, same work, same standards. But now there’s independent verification behind the “conscience” in creativity with conscience. When we say we hold ourselves to the same bar we help our clients reach, someone’s actually checked.

For us, it means joining a community we’ve admired from the sidelines for years: part of a global movement working to benefit people and the planet. You can find us in the B Corp directory. We’re looking forward to getting stuck in.

A huge thank you to Tim Jones, whose expert guidance and considerable patience got us over the line. Five years from first look to certified, but we got there. Also thanks to Jen Gearing, Khales Manokra, Nur Ashikeen Iqbal and B Lab AANZ for their support and encouragement.

Advice for small studios thinking about B Corp

Start now. You don’t need a quiet patch because there isn’t one. The assessment takes longer than you think, teaches you more than you expect, and every bit of it makes you a better business.
