Protecting human rights
Alliance San Diego has spent nearly twenty years building community power in a border city. Their website wasn’t keeping up. We designed and built a new one. A digital home that feels like a community space, puts help one click away, and finally works on a phone.
The Challenge
Alliance does a lot. Immigration services, community organising, civic engagement, policy advocacy and human rights litigation, all under one roof. Their old NationBuilder site couldn’t carry it. The work was buried – three or four clicks to reach immigration services, the page people arrive at in a hurry, worried, needing an answer. Half of all traffic was mobile, where the site wasn’t optimised. 60% bounce rate. 29 seconds of engagement. And the comms team couldn’t change any of it without a developer.
The Idea
We built the site around the three things Alliance does – elevating community, claiming dignity, protecting human rights. Land on the homepage and you get the scope in seconds. Immigration services and Know Your Rights moved into the main nav. One click from anywhere. Real photography of real people replaced the stock imagery, and community stories lead the news. The site shows the humanity of the work rather than describing it. Underneath, it’s a WordPress build the comms team runs themselves. Integrated with EveryAction for donations, events, petitions and consultation bookings. WCAG 2.1 AA, and fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
The Outcome
A site that feels like the organisation it belongs to. Warm, dignified, community-first, and quick to get you where you’re going. Alliance can publish a campaign the same day it matters. And the people who need help find it on the first click, not the fourth.
